The “Venice of the North” is undoubtedly the most romantic and enchanting destination in Belgium. The entire center of the city is a treasure box whose history and masterpieces enrich its value and charm.
Burges has managed to preserve the same poetic and magical atmosphere it had in the fourteenth century when it was the biggest port in the world. Waking along the city canals takes you back to the time when the women portrayed by the Flemish painters dedicated themselves to the art of lace, and when Italian and German merchant sold spices, shins and wine on their small boats on the canals. The city has invaluable treasures. The bell tower rising majestically on the Grote Mrkt (Grand’Place), the Municipal Palace of the three-hundreds, the chapel of the “Sacred Blood” (which names the yearly procession on Ascension Day), and Begijnhof which offers a view of the romantic Minnewater (Lake of Love).
Bruges is easily accessible from Brussels (about 45 minutes by train or car). Though it is close enough to the capital for a day trip, it is worth spending the night in one of its charming hotels facing the canals. Visit Bruges in depth, and you can’t help falling in love with it.
