Jobs: where and how to find them in Brussels

From on-line agencies to student contracts

The first thing to do is to write down your “curriculum vitae” and read the advertisings of the major national newspapers    (Le Soir and Libre Belgique also have a weekly appendix on Saturdays), of the Vlan and The Bullettin (in English). The specialized magazine Move up offers useful addresses and advice on how to write a curriculum or a letter of motivation, and on how to face an interview. For what concerns on line job search, the sites to be seen are many. Here are some: www.stepstone.be, www.career.be, www.jobs-career.be, www.jobstoday.be.

Selection procedures are ruled in a very detailed way. Advertisings have to specify the kind of job to be done, the place, the person to send the c.v. to, and the expiring date to send the job request.
In addition to reading advertisings, you can also ask a selection society, sending them your curriculum, specifying your competencies and the kind of job and position you are looking for. Firms usually pay these agencies, not the person who is looking for a job.
In Brussels there a re a lot of societies that find you short-term jobs. You just have to go to these agencies’ with a c.v. in French or in English, explain what you are looking for, fill in some forms and maybe make a little interview. They usually are jobs that can last for a maximum of six months.
Amongst the most known interim work agencies are: Creyf's (www.creyfs.be), Adecco (www.adecco.be), Manpower (www.manpower.be).

Job contracts
It is a common rule to sign a contract for any kind of job not later than the first work day. In many cases the contract provides for a probationary period of variable time. Contracts can be broken by common agreement of both parts and also unilaterally. In this case a written notification (by registered letter) is necessary. The work relationship can be broken for “serious guilt” (theft, violence, sexual harassment, unjustified absence, not having been paid). Students over sixteen can work during summer vacation, with special contracts under very strict legal and fiscal laws.    Everybody have the right to have a period of vacation with pay that usually lasts 20 days (if the person has worked during the whole previous year). But sometimes employers give a vacation without pay during the first year.
The standard work hours per week are 38.5. There are of course exceptions according to categories and special situations. Overtime work is usually paid or counterbalanced with additional vacation days with pay. This rule is not valid for many categories.

In case of illness if the probationary time is finished, the law provides for being paid for the first month (the worker has to have a medical certificate). If after a month the worker has not recovered yet, then he has the right to be paid according to the social security system. In case of pregnancy working women have the right of fifteen weeks of break. During this time they are not paid by the employer, but by their social security system. Those who have a contract in Belgium have the right to have deductions for insurance and retirement incomes. The working years spent in Belgium can be paid off in Italy. This is a very complex procedure, requiring the assistance of an expert.
