Rising Architects
Emerging architects

Some will be famous, others already are: maybe more abroad than in Italy
Architects born immediately after the war had a hard time working in Italy. Since reconstruction -with its explosion of ideas and projects- slowed down, they have to start the new millenium with a great number of obstacles. Many are the steps to be taken to climb up the professional ladder: competitions, bureaucracy of institutions, university and research difficulties and even the opinions of intellectuals on the environment.

One post-war architect is Massimiliano Fuksas (56, of Lithuanian origin). He works abroad a lot, having offices in Rome, Vienna and Paris. He has designed up to 80 buildings around the world. He strongly supports public competitions, especially abroad and is director of the architecture section of the Biennale di Venezia. He is also the only foreigner to have won the French award “ Officier de l’Ordres dea Arts de Lettres de la Rèpublique”. He is now finally working in Italy on the new EUR congress center in Rome – to be completes three years from now.

The architect who won the “Emerging Architects” award at the Biennale di Venezia is a woman, Carmen Andriani, born in Rome in 1953. Her career began in Italy’s capital city with a city tour path going from the pantheon to the Fountain of Trevi. She also worked on the restoration of Port Corsini in Ravenna and the creation of a technological and environmental park in Rogoredo.

After years of studies in city planning, Umberto Trame from Venice turned to the recovery of historical buildings and areas. In his work he aims at maintaining the relationship between buildings and the area in which they are set. In 1976 he worked on the reconstruction of Friuli it was destroyed by the earthquake. In 1990 he won the In/arch Friuli Venezia Giulia with his restoration of Brugnera’s town hall.

Two famous architects from the Figini and Pollini schools work in Milan: Giulio Marini and Giacomo Polin, In 1989 they won the contract for the reconstruction of Piazza Fontana. They also restored the legendary theatre in Milan as well as Teratro Gerolamo. They are currently working on a tree-planting project in via Santa Sofia, one of Milan’s oldest streets.

In Tuscany, the best known architects are Massimo Carmassi and Pietro Carlo Pellegrini. Carmassi worked on the restoration of Palazzo Lanfranchi in the early ‘80s, and later turned to the cemetery of San Michele (Pisa) enlarging it with his modern techniques and airy style. He has recently reconstructed the convent of San Silvestro, now housing a student dorm of the prestigious Università Normale. Pellegrini 40 years ago was one of the youngest Italian architects. In 1986, only 30 at the time, he was working on the reconstruction of Palazzo Comunale inGarfagnana and, a couple of years later he set up the Cathedral Museum. He is currently building 40 apartments in that same city.
