For many people Turin is the synonym of industry and prosperity in northern Italy.

On a hill to the east of Turin, it can only be reached by car or train, is the Baroque basilica of Superga, built by Juvarra between 1717 and 1731.
It was the Duke Victor Amedeus II who ordered it to honour a vow made to the Madonna when, in 1706, the French were besieging Turin.

As well as the external facade many richly decorated apartments are open to the public, with ceilings painted in the XVII century by Morello and the Flemish Jan Miel.

From the motorway take the ring road to get to the main roads leading to the city centre. From here it’s quite easy to move around since the Turin city streets go right through the city and are all parallel to each other and straight.

Duomo

Built in 1498 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist, il duomo (the cathedral) is the only example of Renaissance architecture in Turin.

The interior of the cathedral is decorated with many statues and paintings.
Beyond the black marble arch in the right hand nave is the chapel of the Holy Shroud.
